Nakanoshima School - Nakanoshima
This is an artistic school of Yamada-ryu koto music. Its founder was Nakanoshima Shosei Kengyo (1838-94), who descended from Onagi Shoso Kengyo, a disciple of Yamada Kengyo, and there are currently six generations of Nakanoshima Shosei. The first Nakanoshima was an elder in the Meiji koto music world, and in particular combined the Yamada-ryu with Tomimoto-bushi. His works include "Shichi Fukujin," "Fushimi," "Matsukaze" (co-written with Yamada-san III), "Banzai," and "Ameyo no Tsuki." The second Nakanoshima Shosei was a disciple of Murakami Masao (?-1892), who was adopted as an artist and took the name Nakanoshima Shoyu, but he died before the first Nakanoshima Shosei. His apprentice Nakanoshima Kiku (1873-1914), who became the wife of the eldest son, shakuhachi player Nakanoshima Kotaro (1878-1922), became the de facto successor, but did not call himself the third Nakanoshima Shosei. The third generation was succeeded by Chisato Sano (1893-1928), who studied under Kikuchika, and took the name Nakanoshima Shosen, but his younger brother Hitoshi Sano (1897-1948) succeeded him as the third generation Yamato Showa. After the death of the third generation, Kikuchika's son Kin'ichi Nakanoshima became the fourth generation, and Kin'ichi's wife Keiko (1912-1988) became the fifth generation, and currently Kin'ichi's eldest daughter Hiroko (1934- ) is the sixth generation.
