The White Rabbit of Inaba

The White Rabbit appears in myths and legends. A rabbit from Oki Island, who was thinking of crossing over to Inaba Province, came up with the idea of ​​tricking the sharks. He called out to the sharks to compare the number of his kind, and made them line up at Ketasaki in Inaba Province. The White Rabbit crossed over, counting his steps, and just as his plan was about to succeed, he was caught by the last shark and had his skin peeled off, saying, "You've been tricked." At this time, Oonamuchi-no-Kami (Okuninushi-no-Mikoto), who was accompanying his brothers on their marriage-promotion trip as a bag-carrier, met the rabbit, and, unlike his brothers, kindly taught him the cure. So the rabbit predicted, "You will be the one who will succeed in proposing marriage."

The story of the rabbit and the shark in the Kojiki is related to other tales in Java and Indonesia, where a cunning animal tricks a stupid animal. However, in the Kojiki, the story is reworked into one in which the cunning rabbit fails, and it is important to note that the rescued rabbit plays the role of a rabbit god who predicts the success of the most despicable Otome-no-kami.

神話・伝承に出てくる白兎。因幡国に渡ろうと考えた隠岐(おき)島の兎は、鮫(さめ)をだますことを思い付き、同族の多さを比べようと鮫に呼びかけて、鮫を因幡国の気多崎(けたのさき)まで並ばせた。その上を踏み数えながら渡った白兎は、まさに計画が成功しようとしたとき、「お前たちはだまされたのだ」といったばかりに、最後の鮫に捕らえられて皮をはがれてしまう。このとき兄たちの求婚旅行の袋担ぎとして同行していた大汝神(おおなむちのかみ)（大国主命(おおくにぬしのみこと)）が兎に会い、兄たちとは反対に、親切に兎に治療法を教えてやった。それで兎は「あなたこそ求婚に成功なさるでしょう」と予言した。

　この『古事記』にみえる兎と鮫の話は、狡猾(こうかつ)な動物が魯鈍(ろどん)な動物をだます動物譚(たん)として、ジャワ島やインドネシアに存在している説話などとも関係がある。しかし『古事記』では狡猾な兎が失敗する話につくりかえられており、助けられた兎が、いちばん卑しい大汝神の成功を予言する兎神としての役割を演じている点に注意する必要がある。
