A Japanese linguist born in Shizuoka Prefecture. Graduated from Kokugakuin University. After a long career teaching Chinese students, he became a professor at Kokugakuin University. His main work is "Kaisen Teijin Nihon Bunpo" (1930). Other works include "Nihon Slanggo Bunten" (1901), the earliest colloquial grammar written by a Japanese person, "Teijin Nihon Bunpo" (1924), "Teijin Kan Bunpo" (1926), and "Teijin Nihon Colloquial Goho" (1930). Matsushita's theory of grammar aims for a universal general theory of grammar, and has a unique logical systematization. He regards language structure in three stages: the phrase that expresses some kind of assertion, the words that are its components, and the original words that are the material for the words. He has presented noteworthy theories such as an analysis of various verbal particles (auxiliary verbs), theories on case relations, passive and causative voices, and theories on topical words, and in recent years, his pioneering value has been highly praised. In addition, "Kokuka Taikan" (1901), co-edited with Watanabe Fumio, and "Kokuka Taikan 2" (1911), edited by Matsushita, are widely used anthologies of waka poems with indexes for each phrase.
