China's first chronicle-style historical work. Written by Yuan Shu of the Southern Song dynasty. 42 volumes. To make up for the drawback of previous chronicle-style and chronological (→ annals) historical works, which made it difficult to grasp the progression of events, the Zizhi Tongjian, a chronological historical work, was classified by topic and organized. It influenced the compilation of historical works in later generations. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
