A small shrub-like perennial plant of the Plumbaceae family that grows on rocky coasts in southern Japan (illustration). Its Japanese name comes from the resemblance of its stem to a pine trunk. The stem is thick, short, and branches upward. Many leaves are gathered at the ends of the branches, are thick, oblanceolate, 2-5 cm long, and 4-7 mm wide. In August and September, the plant grows a branched flower stalk, which produces many spikelets in a cone shape. The spikelets have bracts at their base, and the spikelets are enclosed in two bracts. The calyx is tubular with five shallow lobes, and the corolla is tubular with five lobes and reddish purple in color. It is distributed in the Izu Islands, the Ogasawara Islands, Yakushima, the Ryukyus, and Taiwan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
