Iron acetate with oxidation state II and iron acetate complex with oxidation state III are known. (1) Iron(II) acetate: Chemical formula Fe(CH ₃ COO) ₂ . If iron pieces are left in acetic acid for a long time, a tetrahydrate will precipitate. This is a pale green needle-like crystal that belongs to the monoclinic system and dissolves well in water. It will decompose if left in air. (2) Iron(III) acetate: Its composition is equivalent to the normal salt Fe(CH ₃ COO) ₃ , but its structure is thought to be a trinuclear complex salt such as [Fe ₃ (CH ₃ COO) ₆ ](CH ₃ COO) ₃ .

酸化数IIの鉄の酢酸塩と酸化数IIIの鉄に酢酸イオンが配位した錯体が知られている。(1)酢酸鉄(II)　化学式Fe(CH₃COO)₂。鉄片を酢酸中に長時間放置すると4水和物が析出する。これは淡緑色針状晶で単斜晶系に属し，水によく溶ける。空気中に放置すると分解する。(2)酢酸鉄(III)　組成は正塩Fe(CH₃COO)₃に相当するが，構造は[Fe₃(CH₃COO)₆](CH₃COO)₃のような三核錯塩であると考えられている。
