Yukaghir people - Yukaghir (English spelling)

Japanese: ユカギール族 - ユカギールぞく（英語表記）Yukaghir

A minority group living in northeastern Siberia near the Arctic Ocean. Population: about 1000. They are thought to have lived in the tundra and shrublands east of the Lena River since the Neolithic period, but are now oppressed by the surrounding Tungus and Yakut peoples and live mainly in the upper reaches of the Kolyma River. Their language belongs to the Paleo-Siberian languages and has physiognomic characteristics similar to those of the Baikal Mongoloids. Their original occupation is thought to have been seasonal hunting and fishing. They live in a clan system led by an elder, with a shaman in charge of hunting ceremonies and matrilocal marriage, but now they mainly breed reindeer and their customs are changing due to contact with the Tungus and Russians.

シベリア北東部の北極海寄りに住む少数民族。人口約 1000。新石器時代からレナ川東方のツンドラ，低木地帯に住んでいたと思われるが，現在は周辺のツングース族やヤクート族に圧迫され，おもにコルイマ川上流域に居住。言語は古シベリア諸語に属し，いわゆるバイカル・モンゴロイドに類似した形質的特徴をもつ。本来の生業は季節的に移動する狩猟，漁労であったと思われる。長老の率いる氏族制で，シャーマンが狩猟祭などを司り，妻方居住婚が行われていたが，現在はトナカイ飼育を主とし，慣習もツングース族やロシア人との接触により変りつつある。
