Chinese seals have been used from ancient times to the present day, and the system has been adopted by neighboring ethnic groups. Historically, they can be broadly divided into (1) the ancient seals before the Warring States period, (2) the Han seals from the Han period through the Qin, Wei, and Jin dynasties, and (3) the seals from the Sui and Tang dynasties onward.

The oldest seals are three that were excavated from the Yin Ruins, and are made of copper, have flat rings, and have embossed characters like symbols on the seal surface, but it is unclear to what extent seals were used during this period.

　中国の印章はきわめて古い時代から現在までひきつづいて使用され，その制度は周辺の諸民族にも受容されている。歴史的には大別して(1)戦国以前の古(鉩)（こじ），(2)漢代を中心に秦，および魏･晋にいたる漢印，(3)隋･唐以後の印にわかれる。
