…Although he wrote love poems and other works, his eight tragedies make him the greatest playwright in 16th-century France. These eight plays, “Porcy” (1568), “Hippolyte” (1573), “Cornelly” (1574), “Marc-Antoine” (1578), “The Trojan Women” (1579), “Antigone” (1580), “Bradamante” (1582), and “Jewes” (1583), were based on Greek tragedies, Seneca’s tragedies, the Bible, and Ariosto, and were not original works. His style inherited the tradition of humanist tragedy, but the lively development of scenes and powerful, flamboyant style of writing show a transition to baroque tragedy. …
