Ondra, A.

…In 1907, the first permanent cinema was built in Prague, and in 1912, director Max Urban made films such as The End of Love starring his wife and the country's first star, Anna Sedlackova. After World War I, two young filmmakers, Karel Lamač and Gustav Machaty, boosted Czechoslovakian cinema with their new star, Annie Ondra (who would later become the heroine of Hitchcock's films in England). Machaty's Spring Melody (1933), which portrayed human desire and sexual instinct in symbolic images, was the work that brought Czechoslovakian cinema to the world's attention, with a nude scene featuring Hedy Kiesler (later invited to Hollywood and taking the name Hedy Lamarr), which became a huge hit around the world. In the 1930s, Prague became a film center boasting the finest film studio facilities in Europe, and French films such as The Volga (1934), directed by Victor Turjansky and starring Albert Préjean, and The Golem (1935), directed by Julien Duvivier, were made in Prague.

…1907年にはプラハに最初の映画常設館が建ち，12年にはマックス･ウルバンMax Urban監督が彼の夫人であり最初のスターであるアンナ･セドラチコーバAnna Sedlackova主演の《恋の終り》などをつくった。　第1次世界大戦後，2人の若い映画作家，カレル･ラマーチKarel Lamačとグスタフ･マハティGustav Machatyが，彼らの発見したスター，アニー･オンドラ(のちにイギリスでヒッチコック映画のヒロインになる)とともにチェコスロバキア映画を盛り立てていくが，とくに人間の欲望，性的本能を象徴的なイメージに描いたマハティ監督の《春の調べ》(1933)は，チェコスロバキア映画を一躍世界に知らしめた作品で，ヘディ･キースラー(のちにハリウッドに招かれてヘディ･ラマールと名のる)の全裸シーンが話題を呼び，世界中で大ヒットした。　プラハは1930年代にはヨーロッパで最高の撮影所の施設を誇る映画の中心地となり，ビクトル･トゥールヤンスキー監督，アルベール･プレジャン主演の《炎のボルガ》(1934)，ジュリアン･デュビビエ監督《巨人ゴーレム》(1935)といったフランス映画もプラハでつくられた。…
