Masakatsu Inaba

A Shogunate elder in the early Edo period. The third son of Inaba Masashige. His mother was Kasuga no Tsubone. His first name was Senkuma, and he was commonly known as Uemon. In 1604 (Keicho 9), at the age of 8, he was summoned to serve as a page for Tokugawa Iemitsu, receiving 500 koku and a stipend for 20 people. His mother was Iemitsu's wet nurse, and thereafter he served as Iemitsu's close aide, successively serving as a small storehouse attendant, head attendant, page group head clerk, and shoin group head clerk. In 1623 (Genwa 9), he accompanied Iemitsu to Kyoto, and was appointed Tango no Kami. His stipend was increased to 5,000 koku, and he became a Honmaru elder. In 1624 (Kan'ei 1), his stipend was increased to 5,000 koku, and in 1625, it was increased to 10,000 koku, and in 1626, he inherited his father's estate, with his own estate totaling 40,000 koku. In 1566, when Kato Tadahiro was demoted, he served as an envoy to receive Kumamoto Castle, and on November 23rd of the same year, he was granted an additional 45,000 koku and became the lord of Odawara Domain in Sagami Province (Kanagawa Prefecture). After Hidetada's death in January of the same year, Masakatsu was the one who had the hopes of Iemitsu as a candidate for the position of elder, but in 1571 he fell ill and died in Odawara Castle the following year. 江戸初期の幕府年寄。稲葉正成の3男。母は春日局。初名千熊,通称宇右衛門。慶長9(1604)年,8歳で徳川家光の小姓として召し出され,500石,20人扶持となる。母は家光の乳母であり,以後,家光の側近として,小納戸,徒頭,小姓組番頭,書院組番頭を歴任。元和9(1623)年家光の上洛に供奉し,丹後守に叙任。加増され5000石を知行し,本丸年寄に列す。寛永1(1624)年5000石,2年1万石と加増を重ねられ,同5年,父の遺領を継ぎ,自身の領地を合わせて4万石。9年,加藤忠広の改易に当たって,熊本城受取の上使を務め,同年11月23日,4万5000石を加増され相模国(神奈川県)小田原藩主となった。同年1月の秀忠死後,正勝は子飼いの年寄候補として家光の期待を一身に集めたが,同10年病におち,翌年,小田原城で没した。妻は山田重利の娘。<参考文献>山本博文『寛永時代』,藤井譲治『江戸幕府老中制形成過程の研究』
