Kukai is highly regarded as the founder of Japanese calligraphy, and is known as one of the two saints along with Emperor Saga, and is also known as one of the three great calligraphers, along with Tachibana no Hayase. There are many works that are said to be by Kukai, but the ones that can definitely be recognized as his are "Fushinsho", "Kanjo Rekimei", "Sansho of the Seven Shingon Patriarchs", "Roukoshiiki", "Introduction to the Diamond Prajnaparamita Sutra", "Introduction to the Mahavairocana Sutra", and "Thirty Letters and Sachets". "Fushinsho" are three letters that Kukai wrote to Saicho, all of which were written around 812 or 813.

…During the time of Kouyouji Temple, Kukai, who returned from China in the Tang Dynasty, entered the temple by imperial order in 807 (Daido 2), and thereafter used the temple as his base to promote the spread of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. The famous Kanjo Rekimei (National Treasure), written by Kukai himself, is a record of when Kukai gave the Ryobu Kanjo to over 190 people, including Saicho, Shinko, Taihan, and Encho, at the temple in 812 (Kōnin 3). When the temple was renamed Jingoji Temple, Kukai left the temple and was succeeded by his disciple Shinzai. During their time, the temple was improved, including the construction of the main hall and other halls, and the erection of the Buddhas to be enshrined within them, and the foundation was laid for a Shingon Esoteric Buddhism temple dedicated to holding ceremonies for the protection of the nation, under the strong protection of the imperial court. …
