Brentano gave this name to a beautiful maiden who seduces and ruins men in his narrative poem Lorelei (1801), poets have often taken up and developed this subject. In particular, Heine's poem Lorelei (1823 or 1824) has become widely loved like a folk song thanks to the composition by Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860), and in Japan it is loved for its translation by Kondo Sakufu, which begins with "Najika wa shiranaedo kokoro wabi te (I am sad about the reason)."
