He is an American professional baseball player (right-handed batter and thrower). He played as a catcher for the Cincinnati Reds in Major League Baseball. He was a powerful hitter who batted fourth in the powerful batting line-up known as the "Big Red Machine." Born December 7th in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 1965, he was drafted by the Reds in the second round. He spent three years in the minor leagues, but even then, his strong arm and good defense were noticed and he was expected to be a promising player. He was promoted to the major leagues for the first time in late 1967, and in 1968 he was named Rookie of the Year with a batting average of .275, 15 home runs, and 82 RBIs. His excellent defense earned him a Gold Glove Award. In 1970 and 1972, he won the home run and RBI double crown, contributed to the team's league championship and was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP). In 1974, he won the RBI title for the third time. Together with Pete Rose, who holds the career record for most hits with 4,256, versatile second baseman Joe Morgan (1943-2020), and long-distance hitter George Foster (1948- ), the team won the World Series in two consecutive years in 1975 and 1976, creating a golden era. He continued to win the Gold Glove Award for 10 years until 1977, but due to the demanding position, he became prone to injuries and his opportunities to play gradually decreased thereafter. He retired from active play at the end of 1983. In his last game at home, he hit his 389th and final home run, saying goodbye to the Cincinnati fans. His stats over 17 years were 2,158 games played, 2,048 hits, a batting average of .267, 389 home runs, and 1,376 RBIs. His major titles include Rookie of the Year, home run king twice, RBI king three times, MVP twice, and Gold Glove Award ten times. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.
