A job that involves loading and unloading cargo at a wharf or on board a ship. There are two types of stevedoring: on-board stevedoring, where cargo is loaded and unloaded onto a barge while the ship is at anchor, and longshore stevedoring, where cargo is unloaded or carried onto a quay. Until the Port Labor Law was enacted in 1965, workers in this field were in an unstable employment relationship for a long time. In addition, workers who performed longshore stevedoring were called beach stevedoring (or simply stevedoring), and those who performed on-board stevedoring were called offshore stevedoring, and collectively they were called stevedoring.

埠頭(ふとう)または船内で船の貨物積卸作業を行う仕事。停泊中の船上ではしけへの積卸作業を行う船上荷役と，岸壁で陸揚げまたは搬入を行う沿岸荷役がある。1965年に港湾労働法が制定されるまでは長く不安定な雇用関係の下におかれた。また，沿岸荷役を行う労働者を浜仲仕（または単に仲仕），船上荷役に従事する者を沖仲仕，総称して仲仕と呼んだ。
