[Died] April 18, 1964. New York. American novelist and playwright. Born to Russian Jewish immigrants, he worked as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News (1914-23) while publishing short stories in magazines such as The Little Review and Smart Set. He was one of the central figures of the so-called Chicago Renaissance around the time of World War I. He is known for his ironic and satirical writing style. His works include the novel Erick Dorn (21), the collection of short stories A Thousand and One Afternoons in Chicago (22), Broken Necks (24), the play The Front Page (28), which he co-wrote with Charles MacArthur, Twentieth Century (33), and his autobiography A Child of the Century (54).
