Brazil was discovered by P.A. Cabral in 1500 and became a Portuguese territory. It was left alone for a while, but as its importance was recognized, Portuguese control was gradually strengthened. In 1530, the royal family ordered Martim Afonso de Sousa (1500-64) to explore and settle, and divided the colony into 15 capitanias (capitanian systems). Since colonization of the capitanias other than São Vicente and Pernambuco failed, a governorate was established in Salvador in 1549, and the first governor, T. de Sousa, was dispatched, and the royal family took direct control of the colony.
