A city in northwestern Algeria. The capital of Tlemcen province, bordering Morocco. Located in a humid coastal area at an altitude of 807m, it is an ancient center of the city, with a good location overlooking the fertile plains of Hennaya and Maghnia. In the 4th century, it was called Pomaria (orchard) by the Romans, and later Agadir (cliff) by the Berbers. In the 13th century, it was renamed Tlemcen and became a center of Islamic culture and trade. In the 14th century, it became the capital of the Marinid dynasty of Fes, and in 1559 it came under the control of Algerian Turkey and in 1842 it came under the control of France. In 1962, it became the base of independence fighter Ben Bella. The town is a center of traditional Berber culture, with shops crowded into narrow, winding streets and many old buildings that show strong influences from the Moorish period in Spain. Traditional handicrafts such as woolen textiles such as blankets and carpets, metalwork, and leatherwork are thriving. It is a holy place for Islam, with a large mosque dating back to the 11th century, and is one of the region's leading tourist destinations. Population: 126,882 (1987 estimate).
