Plug - Plug (English spelling)

Plug - Plug (English spelling)

A wiring device used for plugging in electrical circuits. By inserting and removing the plug from the receptacle, it is possible to easily connect and disconnect the electrical wiring and cord, or between cords, at any time. In principle, the plug is connected to the load side and the receptacle to the power source side, and generally the receptacle is fixed to equipment or building materials, and the plug is attached to the end of the cord or mobile electric cable. For power lines, the receptacle is called an outlet, while a connector for intermediate connections of cords is called a socket, and for low-voltage circuits such as radio and telephone, it is also called a jack. A plug with a cord is designed so that the cord cannot be replaced without destroying the plug, such as with one-piece molded devices.

The plug body is made of insulating materials with excellent mechanical properties and low moisture absorption, such as porcelain, rubber, or synthetic resin. The electrode metal fittings of the conductive part are made of copper or copper alloy, and the metal fittings that act as springs are made of phosphor bronze or brass. Power plugs rated at 50 amps or less are regulated as specific electrical appliances under the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act for the safety of users with little electrical knowledge.

Another type of plug is the spark plug used in an internal combustion engine.
