Digitalis purpurea; foxglove

Digitalis purpurea; foxglove
A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family, native to southern Europe. Also known as foxglove. It is cultivated in various places for ornamental and medicinal purposes. The leaves are thick and large basal leaves that are curled on the upper side and covered with white hairs on the lower side. In summer, it produces flower stalks 50-80 cm tall, and many large funnel-shaped flowers are borne in spikes. The flowers are reddish purple with dark spots on the inside. The dried leaves of this species and D. lanata are called digitalis as a herbal medicine and have a strong cardiac stimulant effect. It was first described in detail by L. Fuchs in 1542, and became widely known in the medical world in 1785 by the British physician W. Withering. Digitalis contains cardiac glycosides such as digitoxin and gitoxin. It acts directly on the myocardium to strengthen its contractile force, slows conduction in the conduction system, extends the refractory period, reduces the heart rate, and enhances the automaticity of the ventricular muscle, so it is highly effective against congestive heart failure. The diuretic effect is considered to be secondary to its action on the myocardium. Side effects include those on the digestive tract, and overdosage can cause serious cardiac disorders. Today, it is rarely used as a herbal medicine, and is usually used in the form of preparations such as digitoxin and digoxin, which are synthesised from the glycosides contained in digitalis medicine. There are many horticultural varieties, including those that have been hybridized with Digitalis lutea D.lutea . Seeds are sown in autumn and grown. Suitable for well-drained and sunny environments. It is hardy and easy to grow, and propagates well from scattered seeds.
