Caloric test - Ondo Shigeki Kensa (English name)

Japanese: 温度刺激検査 - おんどしげきけんさ（英語表記）caloric test

Also known as the calorie nystagmus test. A test of balance function using stimulation of the inner ear. Cold or warm water is poured into the ear canal to stimulate the lateral semicircular canals of the inner ear. With the patient in a supine position with the head elevated 30 degrees above the horizontal plane, when water colder than body temperature is poured, horizontal nystagmus appears in the direction opposite to the side where the water was poured, and when water warmer than body temperature is poured, horizontal nystagmus appears in the direction of the side where the water was poured. Measuring the latency, duration, and eye velocity of this nystagmus (rhythmic repetitive eye movement) and comparing the left and right sides is often useful in determining the reactivity of the semicircular canals and diagnosing the location of the lesion.

温度眼振試験ともいう。内耳刺激による平衡機能検査の一つ。冷水あるいは温水を外耳道に注いで，内耳の外側半規管を刺激する。頭部を水平面より 30度挙上した仰臥位で，体温より低温の水を注入すると，注水側と反対側に向う水平眼振が発現し，体温より高温の水を注入すると，注水側向きの水平眼振が発現する。この眼振 (律動的に反復する眼球運動) の潜伏時間，持続時間，眼球速度などを測定し，左右を比較すると，半規管の反応性を判定したり，病巣部位を診断するうえで役立つことが多い。
