Ulanova, Galina Sergeyevna
Born: January 8th/10th, 1910, St. Petersburg, Russia
[Died] March 21, 1998, Moscow, Russia. Russian ballerina. Studied ballet from an early age under her father, a ballet stage director, and her mother, a ballet teacher. In 1928, upon graduating from the Leningrad Ballet School, she made her debut in Chopiniana. She danced in Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Romeo and Juliet, and in 1944 moved from the Kirov Theater to the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, where she danced Cinderella. In 1951, she was invited to the Florence Festival, and subsequently performed in East Germany (1954), London (1956), and Paris (1958), achieving international fame. After retiring in 1962, she continued to train young ballet dancers at the Bolshoi Ballet School and company. In 1951, she was named People's Artist of the USSR. She was also awarded the Stalin Prize and Lenin Prize several times. Her books include The Making of a Ballerina (1959).

ロシアのバレリーナ。バレエ舞台監督の父,バレエ教師の母のもとで幼少よりバレエを学ぶ。 1928年レニングラード・バレエ学校卒業と同時に『ショピニアーナ』でデビュー。『白鳥の湖』『眠れる森の美女』『ジゼル』『ロミオとジュリエット』などを踊り,44年キーロフ劇場からモスクワのボリショイ劇場に移り『シンデレラ』を踊った。 51年フィレンツェ音楽祭に招かれ,その後,東ドイツ (1954) ,ロンドン (56) ,パリ (58) で活躍し,国際的な名声を得た。 62年引退後は,ボリショイ・バレエ学校,同バレエ団で後進を指導。 51年ソ連人民芸術家。また数回にわたってスターリン賞,レーニン賞を受賞。著書に『バレリーナの道』 The Making of a Ballerina (59) がある。
