An old town in Kaho District, central Fukuoka Prefecture. It borders Iizuka City to the south and is on the Chikuho Main Line. It developed as a coal mining town from the mid-Meiji period onwards, and formed the largest coal mine concentration in the Chikuho coalfield, but all of the mines have since closed. An industrial complex exists on the former coal mine site. Vegetables, strawberries and grapes are grown here. In March 2006, it was incorporated into Iizuka City along with Eida Town, Shonai Town and Chikuho Town in Kaho District. 25.23 km2 . Population 26,666 (2003). 福岡県中部,嘉穂郡の旧町。飯塚市の南に隣接し,筑豊本線が通じる。明治時代中期以降,炭鉱町として発展し,筑豊炭田最大の炭鉱密集地を形成したが,全炭鉱閉山した。炭鉱跡地に工業団地がある。野菜,イチゴ,ブドウの栽培が行われる。2006年3月嘉穂郡頴田町,庄内町,筑穂町と飯塚市へ編入。25.23km2。2万6666人(2003)。
