A genus of small spirochetes belonging to the order Spirochetales. The body length is 5-20 μm, the body width is 0.1-0.5 μm, the elongated body has 6-12 spiral turns, and is actively motile. The genus Treponema contains three pathogenic species. Treponema pallidum is the pathogen of syphilis, T. pertenue is the pathogen of yaws, a syphilis-like disease found in tropical regions, and T. carateum is the pathogen of pinta (spot disease) found in tropical Central and South America. スピロヘータ目に属する小型スピロヘータの1属。体長は5~20μm,体幅は0.1~0.5μmで,細長い体は6~12個の螺旋回転をもち,活発な運動を行う。トレポネマ属には3種の病原種が含まれている。トレポネマ・パリズムTreponema pallidumは梅毒の病原体であり,トレポネマ・ペルテヌエT.pertenueは熱帯地方にみられる梅毒様疾患であるフランベジアの病原体であり,トレポネマ・カラテウムT.carateumは熱帯中南米にみられるピンタ(斑点病)の病原体である。
