The remains of a three-story tower building from a mountain villa built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in the Kitayama area of Kyoto during the early Muromachi period. In 1397, Yoshimitsu spent a huge amount of money to build a luxurious villa, which became the Zen temple Rokuon-ji after his death. Kinkakuji is a part of this villa, built as a reliquary hall, with the first and middle floors in the shinden-zukuri style and the upper floor in the Zen style, making it a three-story building. It is commonly called Kinkakuji because the outer walls of the middle and upper floors are covered in gold leaf. It was destroyed by arson in 1950, but was later restored.
