Discovered in Western Siberia in 1965, it is the largest oil field in the Soviet Union. In 1981, production reached a record of about 3 million barrels per day, but production expansion, including water injection, began early on, leading to a period of decline in the 1990s. By the end of the 1990s, production had fallen to 300,000 barrels per day, but it is said that it has since recovered to about 750,000 barrels per day through the application of advanced technology. Tyumenoil-BP, established in 2003 as a 50-50 joint venture between the Russian company TNK and the UK's BP, is responsible for production.
