An annual plant of the Scrophulariaceae family (APG classification: Muscicapae). Native to Indochina. Its Japanese name is Hanaurikusa (flower gourd grass). It is also called Natsusumire because of its appearance similar to that of a violet. The stem has four edges, is 25-30 cm tall, branches well from the bottom, and spreads out over an area of ​​30 cm square per plant. The leaves are opposite, egg-shaped, green, but later turn purple-brown. The flowers are lip-shaped, with two pale blue upper lips that are indistinctly fused together, while the three lower lips are clearly separated, velvety purple-blue, and have yellow spots at the base of the center. There is also a white-flowered variety. The seeds are as tiny as fish eggs, so care should be taken not to sow them too thickly. Once cultivated, it is strong enough that scattered seeds can sprout for several years. It is sown in spring, but can also be sown late, around June, and enjoyed as a flower bed or potted plant in early autumn.

ゴマノハグサ科（APG分類：アゼナ科）の一年草。インドシナ原産。和名はハナウリクサ（花瓜草）という。またスミレに似た草姿からナツスミレともいう。茎は4稜(りょう)があり、高さ25～30センチメートル、下部からよく分枝し、1株で30センチメートル平方に広がる。葉は対生し、卵形で緑色であるが、のちに紫褐色を帯びる。花は唇形で、上唇は淡青色で不明瞭(ふめいりょう)に2枚合着するが、下唇3枚ははっきり分かれ、ビロード状の紫青色で中央の基部に黄色の斑点(はんてん)がある。白色花の変種もある。種子は小魚の卵のように微細なので、厚播(あつま)きにならないよう注意する。一度栽培すると、こぼれ種で何年か芽生えるほどじょうぶである。春播きであるが、6月ころの遅播きにして、秋口の花壇または鉢植え用としても楽しめる。
