…In 1702, the daily newspaper “Daily Courant” was born, and cultural and entertainment papers such as “Spectator” (published in 1711) by Addison and Steele also became popular, and newspapers became established in society. In 1731, Edward Cave published “Gentleman’s Magazine,” creating the prototype of general magazines. However, the 1712 Stamp Act, which imposed taxes on paper and advertising to economically control the media, remained in power until the 19th century (the basic parts were not repealed until 1855), and prevented the popularization of newspapers and the emergence of cheap popular papers, which had become a reality in France and America in the 1830s. …

…This magazine, edited by the writer Jean Donneau de Visé and containing court news, anecdotes, and short poems, was followed within a few years by similar magazines in Germany, England, and other countries. After the English printer Edward Cave launched the Gentleman's Magazine in 1731 and achieved success, many magazines were born with the word "magazine" in their name. The word originally meant a warehouse or storehouse, but by the mid-18th century it had become established as a word for magazines, and when the first two American magazines were launched in Philadelphia in 1741, they were called the American Magazine (founded by Andrew Bedford) and the General Magazine (founded by B. Franklin). …
