Constantly experimenting and revising, he experimented with a variety of works, including sonnets, odes, plays, epics, satires, pastorals, religious poems, epistolary poems, and laments. His works include the pastoral Idea (1593), the sonnets Idea's Mirror (94), the historical poem Piers Gaveston (93), Matilda (94), the heroic poem Mortimeriados (96, revised version of The Barons' Wars), the well-received long patriotic poem Polyolbion (1612-22), and the pseudo-heroic fairy tale Nymphidia (27).
