French playwright and novelist. He made his debut in the literary world with the comedy Les Bourgeoisies à Rome (1845), and wrote many plays and novels. As a defender of idealism, he consistently took an anti-naturalist stance, but he also wrote many popular novels, such as Les Poor Young Men (1858), about the son of a fallen nobleman who becomes employed but retains his noble spirit and is finally rewarded. In 1862, he was elected a member of the Académie Française. [Ohama Hajime]

フランスの劇作家，小説家。喜劇《ローマのブルジョア》(1845)で文壇に登場，多くの戯曲，小説を著す。理想主義の擁護者として反自然主義の立場を貫くが，没落した貴族の息子が人に雇われる身分になっても高貴な魂を持ち続け，ついに報われるといった筋の小説《貧しい青年の物語》(1858)に代表されるように，通俗小説が多い。1862年，アカデミー･フランセーズの会員に選出された。【大浜甫】
