A term used in opposition to the Rikken Kaishinto, a general term for the political parties that opposed the clan-based government in the early Meiji period. It is a general term for the Liberal Party and the Constitutional Reform Party, which took an anti-government stance (opposition party) from around the time the Imperial Diet was opened (1890) until the start of the Sino-Japanese War (1894), and does not refer to a specific political party.
