A town in northwestern Finland, on the border with Sweden. It is located near the mouth of the Torne River, which flows into the Gulf of Bothnia. Population: 21,300 (1981). In 1621, the Swedish government developed the island of Suensaari in the river as a commercial center for the north, including Lapland, and this became the birthplace of Tornio. In the late 1700s, the town prospered through shipbuilding. In the war with Russia that began in 1808, the town was severely damaged. In 1809, the Torne River became the border between Sweden and Finland, and most of the wealthy villages and former shipyards in the commercial area came into Swedish territory.
