…Havana was occupied by the British for a time from 1762 to 1763, but later flourished as a political, economic and cultural center with the development of Cuba's sugar industry, and became the capital of the Republic of Cuba after it gained independence from Spanish rule in 1902. Havana, with its many white buildings, has long been known for its beauty, so much so that it has been called the "Pearl of the Antilles." In the old town, centered around the Plaza de Armas, there remain imposing colonial-era buildings, such as the former official residence of the Capitan General, which is now the city museum, as well as various churches, monasteries and the University of Havana. …
