Switching equipment used for telecommunications such as telephone and data communications consists of a switching circuit network that switches and connects communication signals, and a control circuit that controls it, as shown in Figure 1. An exchange in which this switching circuit network is made up of digital circuits is called a digital exchange. Digital telephone switching is a method of digitally multiplexing voice signals using pulse code modulation (PCM) and switching these signals, while digital data switching is a method in which the original signal is data. There is also digital image switching, which handles image signals.

電話やデータ通信など通信用に使用されている交換機は，図1に示すように通信信号の切換接続を行うスイッチ回路網とそれを制御する制御回路から構成されている。このスイッチ回路網をディジタル回路で構成した交換機をディジタル交換機という。音声信号をパルス符号変調(PCM)によりディジタル多重化し，これを交換する方式がディジタル電話交換であり，原信号がデータであるものがディジタルデータ交換である。また画像信号を対象とするディジタル画像交換もある。
