Livonian War

1558-83: Russian war against the Livonian Order, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden. During the reign of Ivan IV (the Terrible), Russia sought trade with Western Europe and attempted to advance into the Baltic Sea, but was prevented from doing so by the Livonian Order. In 1558, Ivan IV used force to capture several cities, including Narva. In response, Lithuania and Poland united to oppose Russia, and Sweden also declared war on Russia. In 1582, with the mediation of Pope Gregory XIII, Russia made peace with Lithuania and Poland, restoring the border to the state it had before the war, and the following year it also made peace with Sweden, ending the war. Due to this failure, Russia was unable to advance into the Baltic Sea until the early 18th century under Peter I (the Great).

1558～83年リボニア騎士団，リトアニア (リトワ) ，ポーランド，スウェーデンに対するロシアの戦争。イワン4世 (雷帝)時代のロシアは西ヨーロッパとの交易を求めて，バルト海への進出をはかったが，リボニア騎士団にはばまれて実現できなかった。そこでイワン4世は 58年武力をもってナルバをはじめとして，いくつかの都市を占領した。これに対しリトアニアとポーランドは合同してロシアに対抗，さらにスウェーデンもロシアに戦いを宣した。 82年ローマ教皇グレゴリウス 13世の仲介でロシアはリトアニア，ポーランドと和して国境を戦前の状態に復し，翌年にはスウェーデンとも和して戦争は終った。この失敗によりロシアは 18世紀初めのピョートル1世 (大帝) の時代までバルト海へ進出することができなかった。
