...It is located in the southern part of the Shimabara Peninsula, at the southern foot of Mount Unzen, with the Arima River flowing east along the southern border. During the Sengoku period, it flourished as a castle town around Hinoe Castle, where the Arima clan was based. In 1580 (Tensho 8), Arima Seminary was established under the protection of the Christian daimyo Arima Harunobu, and four boys from the Tensho Embassy to Europe also studied here. In 1614 (Keicho 19), the Arima clan was transferred to Hyuga Nobeoka, and the Matsukura clan later became the lords of the castle, but in the Genna era (1615-24), they moved to Shimabara, and the castle was demolished and fell into disrepair. ...
