It is the capital of Trnava County in western Slovakia. It has a population of 70,286 (2001). It is located on the Trnava Plateau on the northern side of the Danube River basin plain. It is the oldest city in Slovakia, having acquired city rights in 1238. In the 16th century it became the center of the Catholic Church of the Kingdom of Hungary, and in the 17th century a Catholic university was established there. It is the seat of an archbishopric, and has many religious facilities, including the Parish Church of St. Miklás, with its Gothic double spire. Industries include food, automobiles (cargo), and building materials, and Sony has established a presence there and manufactures television parts. In addition to Trnava University, which was established in 1991, there is one faculty each of the Technical University and University of Economics in Bratislava, and the Pedagogical University in Nitra.
