The protagonist of the great Indian epic poem, the Ramayana. He is widely worshipped throughout India and Southeast Asia as the seventh incarnation of the god Vishnu. He was born as the eldest son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, the capital of the Kosala kingdom, and married Sita, the daughter of King Janaka. Due to slander, he was forced to travel for 14 years with Sita and his brother Lakshmana, and Sita was taken by the demon king Ravana. However, with the help of an army of monkeys, he defeated Ravana after a fierce battle, retrieved Sita, and ascended to the throne of Ayodhya. His and Sita's eventful life was filled with the aesthetic and ethical ideals of ancient India, and the two have been enthusiastically revered by the Indian people to this day as ideal personalities of royalty (kshatriyas).
