Hinayana Buddhism

Japanese: 小乗仏教 - しょうじょうぶっきょう

Also known as Hinayana. As opposed to Mahayana Buddhism. Hinayana is a translation of the Sanskrit word Hinayana. After the establishment of Mahayana Buddhism, this term was used to derogatorily refer to previous sects of Buddhism as those that aimed only for personal salvation. There are 20 sects, including Theravada and its offshoot, Sarvastivada. Currently, most Buddhism in Southeast Asia is Hinayana, while the Sarvastivada lineage remains in China and other countries. All sects are organized into religious organizations consisting only of monks centered around Abhidharma.

小乗とも。大乗仏教に対する。小乗はサンスクリットのヒーナヤーナの訳。大乗仏教が成立してから，それまでの部派仏教を，自己一身の救いのみを目ざすものとして，軽んじて呼んだ呼称。上座部および，それからの分派である説一切有部など20部派がある。現在東南アジア一帯の仏教はほとんど小乗で，中国その他には説一切有部の系統が残っている。いずれの部派も阿毘達磨(あびだつま)を中心とする比丘(びく)のみによる教団を組織している。
