Located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, it is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands. It has an area of 52 km2 and a population of about 9,000. It is a volcanic island, with its capital Road Town facing the bay in the central south. Small islands are dotted on both sides of the island, making it one of the world's leading cruising spots. In 1954, Mt. Sage (521m), the highest point on the islands, was designated a nature preserve as an equatorial evergreen broad-leaved forest area. Mahogany, cedar, and other species have been planted in areas with little vegetation, and forestation is gradually progressing. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
