Kayan people - Kayan (English spelling)
Indigenous people of Borneo. They share a cultural similarity with the neighboring Kenyah people, and in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, they are considered one group and are also called the Bahau people. The population is estimated at about 27,000. They live in the middle reaches of the Kayan, Mahakam, and Kapuas rivers, and practice slash-and-burn agriculture. Their staple food is rice. A few to several dozen families live together, and a village is made up of several longhouses. Kinship is bilateral. Each village is led by a hereditary chief and nobles, and there is a clear social hierarchy, with a commoner class and a slave class. In their traditional religion, they worship a supreme god, and bird divination and divination using pig liver are important in daily life. They also have a strong faith in shamans called dayongs, and agricultural rituals are also popular. They excel in ironsmithing, and have music that mainly uses stringed instruments and sophisticated patterns.
