Namba - Naniwa

Japanese:
Namba - Naniwa
The old name of the present-day city of Osaka and its surrounding areas. It is also written as "Naniwa" or "Naniwa". In the pre-Taika period, it flourished as a key location for maritime traffic. In particular, after the tribute of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, the Korokan was established to receive foreign envoys, and it became the center of the Imperial Court's foreign negotiations. Shitennoji Temple was built by Prince Shotoku. In addition, the Imperial Palace was established several times, albeit for a short period of time (→ Naniwa-kyo). For these reasons, Settsu, including Naniwa, did not have a kokushi (provincial governor), but instead had a Settsushiki (administrative office), but this was abolished during the reign of Emperor Kanmu. This Naniwa came to be called Osaka after Rennyo of Hongan-ji Temple built a training hall in Ikutama-sho Osaka. This area was later ruled by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and a castle was built there, but after the fall of the Toyotomi clan, it was ruled by the Osaka Castle Deputy. Namba in present-day Osaka City is the terminal of the Nankai Electric Railway, Kintetsu, and the underground rapid railway.

Namba

This downtown area stretches from the southwest of Osaka's Chuo Ward to Naniwa Ward. It is the area around Nankai Electric Railway's Namba Station. Until the early Meiji period, it was a suburban agricultural region, but in 1884 the Hankai Railway (now the Nankai Electric Railway) opened, and Namba Station opened the following year. Since then, it has rapidly developed along with Sennichimae, and together with Shinsaibashi-suji and Dotonbori, it forms Osaka's most popular downtown area, "Minami." Today, it is a major terminal where the Kintetsu Railway and subway lines converge, with many theaters, movie theaters, amusement parks, and restaurants, and the underground area is a shopping district. The area south of Namba Station is Naniwa Ward, and a large sports and amusement center has been formed around the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium.
