Omori
A settlement in the west of Oda City, central Shimane Prefecture. Former town name. Incorporated into Oda City in 1956. Known as an old mining town, it was the site of the former Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine (historic site). It has prospered as a silver mine since the Keicho era (1596-1615). At its peak in the Kanei era (1524-1644), it is said that there were tens of thousands of miners, and the nearby Yunotsu port was the starting point for silver transportation. During the Edo period, it became a direct territory of the shogunate and a magistrate's office was located there. It is home to Ido Shrine, which enshrines Ido Heizaemon, a magistrate who encouraged sweet potato cultivation to save the area from famine, Rakanji Temple, which has 500 arhat statues, and Omori Townscape, a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
