Huang Kan (English spelling)

Japanese: 黄侃 - こうかん（英語表記）Huáng Kǎn

1866‐1935
A Chinese scholar of phonological exegesis. His pen name was Ji Gang, and in his later years he went by the name Liang Shou Jushi. He was from Qichun, Hubei Province. While studying in Japan he studied under Zhang Binglin, learning elementary schooling and classics, and after returning to China he served as professor at Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Jinling University, and other universities. He inherited and compiled the tradition of elementary school research that was popular during the Qing dynasty. He devoted himself to research and teaching, and although he published few works during his lifetime, his Miscellaneous Writings on Academic Theory of Huang Kan was published after his death, which included A Summary of Phonetics and A Summary of Voice and Rhyme. 中国の文字音韻訓詁学者。字は季剛，晩年は量守居士と号した。湖北省蘄春（きしゆん）の人。日本留学中に章炳麟に師事，小学，経学を学び，帰国後は北京大学，北京師範大学，金陵大学等の教授を歴任。清朝に流行した小学研究の伝統を継承し集大成した。研究と教学に専念し，生前発表された著述は少ないが，没後《黄侃論学雑著》が刊行され，《音略》《声韻略説》などが収められた。【松尾良樹】
