The canal stretches 269 km from Dortmund in central-western Germany to Emden on the North Sea, using the Ems River for some sections. It was built with the intention of conducting foreign trade between the Ruhr industrial region and Germany through its own seaports, and was completed in 1899. It is connected to the Rhine via the Rhein-Herne Canal and the Wesel-Datteln Canal, and also to the Mittelland Canal. It also plays an important role as part of the canal linking the Rhine and Elbe Canals. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
