Mayan Culture

Japanese: マヤ文化 - まやぶんか

A Mesoamerican culture that spread across Central America from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Pacific coast of Guatemala and El Salvador. The Maya culture is characterized by its unique writing system, astronomical calendar, and religious system inherited and developed from the Olmec and Zapotec cultures, as well as the corbel arch architecture invented by the Maya themselves. These characteristics reached their peak during the Classic period. For example, the Maya calendar became extremely precise, and the custom of inscribing historical events and regular astronomical observation records with precise dates on stone monuments and erecting them continued unless there was a major change.

中央アメリカ，ユカタン半島からグアテマラ，エルサルバドルの太平洋岸までの地域に展開したメソアメリカの文化の一つ。オルメカ文化やサポテカ文化から継承し発展させた独特の文字体系，天文暦数，宗教体系，そしてマヤ自身の発明による持送り式アーチ工法による建築などがマヤMaya文化の特徴である。とくに古典期においてそれらの特徴は頂点を極めた。たとえば，マヤ暦は精密そのものとなり，歴史的事件や定期的な天体観測記録を正確な日付をもって石碑に刻み建立する習慣は，よほどの変動がない限り絶やすことがなかった。
