This name was given to Santomejima (Santome stripes) imported by the Dutch, and is also called Karazandome. It is also sometimes used to refer to high-quality Santome stripes. It is a cotton fabric with vertical stripes of red or light yellow threads dyed with safflower on a navy blue background. It has been imported from southern countries since the end of the Middle Ages and had a great influence on Japanese dyeing and weaving, but even after it was domestically produced, there was a big difference in quality between imported products and domestically produced products, so Karazan was highly valued. In the Kawagoe region of Saitama Prefecture, in 1861 (Bunkyu 1), Nakajima Kyuhei purchased Western thread from the Yokohama Yonekan and, together with Nakamura Tokubeiji and Yamada Mon'emon, wove cotton stripes imitating Karazan, which became commonly known as Kawagoe Karazan (Kawato). The current Boso Tozan ware is a designated intangible cultural property of Chiba Prefecture, and the tradition was passed down by Toyokichi Saito. It inherits techniques that were passed down at Empress Shoken's Industrial Center in 1868 (Meiji 1).
