Yashajin Pass - Yashajin Pass

This pass is located in the saddle between Mt. Ogare-Atama and Mt. Takatani in the Koma Mountains, which border the west side of the Kofu Basin in western Yamanashi Prefecture. It is 1,770 meters above sea level. It was once used as a pass to go from Ashiyasu Village (now Minami-Alps City) on the basin side to the charcoal-burning hut in Ayusashi along the Noro River. It became known to the public in 1962 (Showa 37) when the forest road was opened, about 22 kilometers long, from Momonoki in Ashiyasu Village to Hirogawara just below Kita-dake, and two tunnels, including the Yashajin Tunnel, were opened 1,148 meters below the pass, improving accessibility and attracting many tourists. The pass is known to many hikers as an observation deck for the Southern Alps, and is also used as the starting point of the traverse route to the Houou Sanzan mountains.

山梨県西部、甲府盆地の西側を限る巨摩(こま)山地の大崖頭山(おおがれあたまやま)と高谷山(たかたにやま)の鞍部(あんぶ)にある峠。標高1770メートル。かつて盆地側の芦安(あしやす)村（現、南アルプス市）などから野呂(のろ)川沿いの鮎差(あゆさし)の炭焼き作業小屋へ行く峠として利用された。一般に知られるようになったのは、1962年（昭和37）芦安村桃ノ木から北岳直下の広河原(ひろがわら)に至る約22キロメートルの林道の開設に際し、峠の直下1148メートルの地点に夜叉神トンネルのほか二つのトンネルが開通し、交通の便が向上し多くの観光客が入山したことによる。峠は南アルプスの展望台として多くのハイカーに知られると同時に、鳳凰(ほうおう)三山への縦走路の起点としても利用されている。
