Kashiwagi Jotei
Year of death: 10th July 1819 (30th August 1819)
Year of birth: 1763 (13th year of the Horeki era)
A Chinese poet of the mid-Edo period. His given name was Akira, his pen name was Eijitsu, he was commonly known as Monsaku, and his pen names were Nyotei and Shochiku. Born into a family of carpenters for the Edo Shogunate, he studied poetry under Ichikawa Kansai at a young age, and joined the Jianghu Poetry Society, playing a part in changing the Edo poetry world from the archaic style of Kobunji Kacho to the new Seirei style of poetry that dealt with everyday subjects. He took over the family business as a carpenter for the small construction department, but he continued to live a life of debauchery in Yoshiwara, squandering all the family fortune and resigning from his job in 1794 at the age of 32. He then turned to the life of a traveling poet, traveling to Joshu, Shinshu, Echigo, and as far west as Kyoto, Ise, Bitchu, and Sanuki, where he made a living by teaching poetry and selling calligraphy and paintings, but died in Kyoto. He lived an epicurean life, wearing fashionable clothes and enjoying fine food, but when it came to poetry he maintained a sober attitude and left behind many fresh lyric poems. His works include the poetry collections "Mokukoshu" (1793), "Nyoten Sanjin Koshoshu" (1810), "Nyoten Sanjin Ikoshu" (1822), and the Chinese essay "Shihonsho" (1822), which records his memories of travels and delicious food. <References> "Kashiwagi Nyotenshu" edited by Ibi Takashi
