A leading Russian daily newspaper. Founded in Moscow on February 19, 1921, its title means "Labor." In the former Soviet Union it was the organ of the Central Council of Soviet Trade Unions (VKP, see the GCTU entry), but is now published under the auspices of independent trade unions, and with a circulation of 1.25 million (2.5 million for the Friday edition), it is the second largest in Russia after Komsomolskaya Pravda. The public utility company Gazprom is its major shareholder. It is pro-government and has a moderate editorial policy. It reports on topics such as unionism and living conditions for workers.
